  • AI-powered scams and deepfakes are fueling a new era of paranoia, with fraudsters exploiting platforms like LinkedIn and live video calls to create convincing fake identities, leading to a fivefold increase in job scam losses from $90 million to $500 million between 2020 and 2024.

  • Professionals like Nicole Yelland and companies such as Ropes are employing extreme verification tactics—including language tests, timestamped selfies, and the "phone camera trick"—while startups like GetReal Labs and Reality Defender race to build AI-based deepfake detection solutions.

  • Despite tech solutions, some researchers, including Jessica Eise at Indiana University, have reverted to old-school methods like snowball sampling and physical flyers to ensure research integrity, highlighting the growing distrust and inefficiency this new reality imposes.
