UK Closes Google, Apple Probes Ahead of New Digital Rules Regime
By Katharine Gemmell via Bloomberg
The UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has closed its probe into Google's and Apple's app stores ahead of new digital market rules set to come into force this fall.
The new rules will give the CMA more power to address the dominance of major tech firms, with early enforcement efforts expected to focus on app stores.
This move marks a significant step in the UK's efforts to regulate digital markets and curb the influence of major players like Google and Apple.

By Dan Goodin via Ars Technica
A recent Microsoft update aimed at fixing a critical vulnerability in GRUB has caused dual-boot systems running Windows and Linux to fail to boot into Linux, displaying the error "Something has gone seriously wrong."
The update, which was intended to secure the boot process, inadvertently affected multiple Linux distributions, including Ubuntu, Debian, and Linux Mint, despite Microsoft's assurance that dual-boot systems would not be impacted.
Users have been forced to disable Secure Boot or remove the problematic SBAT policy to restore functionality, with Microsoft yet to publicly acknowledge or address the issue.

Microsoft is building a data center in Mekaguda, India, but locals allege the company has illegally occupied land and is dumping industrial waste into a nearby lake, threatening their livelihoods.
A petition by 56 residents accuses Microsoft of environmental contamination, though Microsoft denies the claims, asserting it has complied with all local regulations and obtained necessary permits.
Despite the allegations, the Telangana government supports the project, stating that Microsoft has high compliance standards and regularly monitors the construction to ensure it remains within legal bounds.
