EU could tax Big Tech if Trump trade talks fail, says von der Leyen
By Henry Foy via Financial Times
EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen warned the bloc may impose levies on US tech giants like Amazon, Google, and Facebook if trade talks with Donald Trump fail, potentially targeting digital ad revenues and services.
The EU’s retaliation could expand to include the use of its anti-coercion instrument, tariffs on US services, and a possible levy on scrap metal exports, while pausing immediate action to give diplomacy a chance.
Von der Leyen emphasized a shift in global trade dynamics, citing the Trump-era tariff war as a turning point and calling for WTO reform, while increasing engagement with countries in Asia and the Gulf to rebalance global trade.
𝕏: We took note of the announcement by President Trump. We want to give negotiations a chance. While finalising the adoption of the EU countermeasures that saw strong support from our Member States, we will put them on hold for 90 days. If negotiations are not satisfactory, our countermeasures will kick in. Preparatory work on further countermeasures continues. As I have said before, all options remain on the table. - Ursula von der Leyen (@vonderleyen)
In Secret Meeting, China Acknowledged Role in U.S. Infrastructure
By Dustin Volz via Wall Street Journal
In a secret diplomatic meeting, Chinese officials privately acknowledged their country’s involvement in cyberattacks targeting U.S. critical infrastructure, including water and energy systems.
The admission came during high-level U.S.-China talks aimed at reducing tensions and avoiding escalation in cyberspace, though Beijing publicly continues to deny involvement.
The hacks were reportedly tied to Volt Typhoon, a Chinese cyber group linked to China's military, which U.S. officials say aims to pre-position access for potential disruption in the event of a conflict.

Apple is facing internal turmoil and declining investor confidence, driven by underwhelming Vision Pro sales, delays and failures in its Apple Intelligence AI rollout, and fallout from new Trump-era tariffs that wiped out $773 billion in market value.
The company’s struggles expose deep-rooted issues: leadership infighting, talent exodus, and budget constraints, including limited investment in critical AI infrastructure like GPUs, leaving teams reliant on competitors’ cloud chips.
A delayed revamp of Siri, plagued by inaccuracies and internal power struggles, has led to executive reshuffling and customer backlash, including a federal lawsuit and suspended advertising, as Apple races to regain momentum.
Microsoft is about to launch Recall for real this time
By Jay Peters via The Verge
Microsoft is rolling out its long-delayed Recall feature to Windows Insiders in the Release Preview channel, signaling a broader launch is imminent.
Recall captures screen snapshots on Copilot Plus PCs, allowing users to revisit past activity, but requires users to opt in and can be paused at any time.
The feature was originally slated for June 2024 but faced multiple delays due to security and privacy concerns raised by experts.
DoorDash starts robot deliveries in LA and Chicago
By Lawrence Bonk via Engadget
DoorDash has launched robot deliveries in Los Angeles and Chicago through a partnership with Coco Robotics, covering over 600 local merchants.
The initiative builds on a pilot in Helsinki, where Coco robots completed 100,000+ deliveries, and is part of DoorDash’s broader multimodal delivery strategy.
With zero-emissions robots and ongoing tests of drone deliveries via Wing, DoorDash aims to reduce costs and environmental impact while meeting growing demand.
