🚀 Grok 4 Drops, OpenAI’s Browser, Vercel API Beta

Plus: Browser Extensions Expose Users as Bots; Google Unveils Veo 3 Upgrade.

Good morning. It’s Thursday, Jul 10. Today we are covering:

Let’s dive in

Grok 4 is live - here's what makes it Elon Musk's most advanced AI yet

By Amanda Caswell via Tom's Guide

  • Elon Musk's xAI unveiled Grok 4, its most advanced model yet, boasting multimodal capabilities, scientist-grade reasoning, real-time web access, and a coding-focused variant aimed at developers.

  • The launch follows a credibility crisis sparked by Grok’s earlier versions generating racist and antisemitic content, prompting public backlash and urgent updates to content moderation.

  • Despite the controversy, Grok 4 positions itself as a bold alternative to GPT-5 and Gemini 2.5, emphasizing speed, cultural fluency, and fewer guardrails—but whether it can balance power with responsibility remains uncertain.

𝕏: Grok 4 is the first time, in my experience, that an AI has been able to solve difficult, real-world engineering questions where the answers cannot be found anywhere on the Internet or in books. And it will get much better. - Elon Musk (@elonmusk)

OpenAI to release web browser in challenge to Google Chrome

By Kenrick Cai via Reuters

  • OpenAI is preparing to launch an AI-powered web browser with a built-in chat interface and support for AI agents, challenging Google Chrome’s dominance and expanding OpenAI’s reach into user web behavior data.

  • Built on Chromium and designed to integrate tools like Operator, the browser enables AI-driven actions—such as form-filling and reservations—potentially reshaping how users interact with the web.

  • The move intensifies OpenAI’s rivalry with Google, whose Chrome browser underpins a major share of its ad revenue, while also positioning OpenAI to compete with other AI-first browsers like Perplexity’s Comet and Brave.

𝕏: OpenAI is planning to launch a Google Chrome competitor within weeks. The browser includes a chat interface that would help keep users from having to click through to external links, sources tell @Reuters - Kenrick Cai (@kenrickcai)

v0 Platform API now in beta

Vercel

  • Vercel's v0 Platform API is now in public beta, offering programmatic access to its text-to-app pipeline, including prompt-based code generation, structured parsing, error fixing, and preview linking.

  • Developers can use the API to create and manage chats and projects on v0.dev, with more platform functionality coming soon.

  • The API is designed for seamless integration into development workflows, automation scripts, and third-party tools, with a TypeScript SDK and detailed documentation available.

Browser extensions turn nearly 1 million browsers into website-scraping bots

By Dan Goodin via Ars Technica

  • 245 browser extensions installed on nearly 1 million devices are using the open-source MellowTel-js library to secretly scrape websites on behalf of paying clients, overriding security protections across Chrome, Firefox, and Edge.

  • The extensions weaken browser security by disabling headers like Content-Security-Policy and injecting invisible iframes, exposing users to privacy risks and potential cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks.

  • Researcher John Tuckner linked the scraping activity to the Olostep API, warning that users unknowingly become part of a distributed botnet, with extension developers earning 55% of revenue from the monetization scheme.

Google adds image-to-video generation capability to Veo 3

By Ivan Mehta via TechCrunch

  • Google has added an image-to-video generation feature to its Veo 3 AI video model via the Gemini app, expanding a tool first introduced in its Flow platform at Google I/O in May.

  • The feature is available in over 150 countries for Google AI Ultra and Pro plan users, who can generate up to three videos per day, including audio prompts and shareable download options.

  • Over 40 million videos have been created across Gemini and Flow in seven weeks; all Veo 3 videos carry both a visible “Veo” watermark and a SynthID digital watermark for AI content traceability.
