Microsoft is laying off as many as 9,000 employees

By Tom Warren via The Verge

  • Microsoft is cutting up to 9,100 jobs—about 4% of its workforce—in a major layoff wave hitting its Xbox division and other gaming units like King, Zenimax, and Rare, where the game Everwild has reportedly been canceled.

  • The move follows multiple rounds of layoffs over the past year, including cuts to Activision Blizzard, HoloLens, Azure, and previous Xbox staff, with over 6,000 jobs already eliminated in recent months.

  • Xbox head Phil Spencer said the cuts are aimed at boosting agility and focusing on “strategic growth areas,” while impacted employees will receive severance, healthcare, and job placement support.

Here's What Mark Zuckerberg Is Offering Top AI Talent

By Zoë Schiffer via WIRED

  • Meta has offered select AI researchers pay packages reportedly worth up to $300 million over four years, with over $100 million in first-year compensation, including instantly vesting equity.

  • Despite Meta's denials of exaggerated figures, internal data and interviews confirm some senior roles exceed $1.5 million annually, as the company aggressively courts OpenAI talent to staff its new Superintelligence Labs.

  • The lab is led by Alexandr Wang and Nat Friedman, though neither are traditional researchers; no chief scientist has been named, and no OpenAI defector is confirmed to have received the full $300 million offer.
