Good morning. It’s Thursday, May 15. Today we are covering:

Let’s dive in

Democratizing AI: The Psyche Network Architecture

By Rishav Kundu via NOUS RESEARCH

  • Psyche Network introduces a decentralized AI training infrastructure, leveraging underutilized global hardware and the DisTrO optimization family to compress training communication, drastically reducing bandwidth and computation costs.

  • The system’s architecture combines on-chain coordinators, P2P GPU clients, and data providers, supporting efficient distributed training through innovations like Overlapped DisTrO and 1-bit quantization of gradients for over 3x communication compression.

  • Psyche’s first large-scale project, Consilience, will pretrain a 40B parameter model using the advanced Multi-head Latent Attention (MLA) architecture, representing the largest internet-based pretraining run to date and aiming to democratize access to advanced AI capabilities.

Coinbase says customers' personal information stolen in data breach

By Zack Whittaker via TechCrunch

  • Coinbase confirmed a major data breach involving stolen customer personal data, including government-issued IDs, account balances, and transaction histories; the hacker demanded a $20 million ransom, which Coinbase refused to pay.

  • The breach exploited support staff outside the U.S., who were paid to leak information; affected data includes names, contact details, partial Social Security numbers, masked bank details, and internal corporate documents.

  • Less than 1% of Coinbase’s 9.7 million monthly users were impacted, and the company expects to spend $180 million to $400 million on remediation and reimbursements while bolstering its security defenses.

𝕏: Kids steal >$50m every weekend via Coinbase CEX account takeovers. Coinbase has failed to understand, detect, or stop these for over a year. Coinbase instead decided to build a feature that gives scammers a direct, encrypted line to all their wallet users. Incredible. - Tay (@tayvano_)

Microsoft Cuts Off Access to Bing Search Data as It Shifts Focus to Chatbots

By Paresh Dave via WIRED

  • Microsoft will shut down its Bing Search APIs on August 11, 2025, pushing developers toward its AI-centric alternative, despite criticism that it lacks the flexibility and raw data access previously available.

  • Major customers like DuckDuckGo will retain API access through private deals, but smaller developers are being cut off, raising concerns about long-term reliance on Microsoft and accelerating efforts to develop independent search solutions.

  • The decision comes amid rising competition from AI chatbots, regulatory pressure on Google, and Microsoft’s broader cost-cutting moves, including laying off 6,000 employees to streamline operations.

𝕏: Today I learned Microsoft is retiring the Bing API. Removing it completely. Why? It’s super powerful when used as training data for LLMs - look at o3 - Casper Hansen (@casper_hansen_)

Apple's CarPlay Ultra is finally here, if you have a new Aston Martin

By Emma Roth via The Verge

  • Apple’s CarPlay Ultra has officially launched, starting with new Aston Martin vehicles in the US and Canada, with broader availability and support for Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis models coming soon.

  • The system offers deep integration with car controls via onscreen interfaces, physical buttons, or Siri, and introduces iPhone-powered widgets tailored to fit car screens and gauge clusters.

  • Compatible with iPhone 12 or newer running iOS 18.5+, CarPlay Ultra delivers dynamic real-time content across all driver displays, including maps, media, ADAS data, and detailed vehicle metrics like tire pressure.

𝕏: Apple has just announced that CarPlay Ultra, its next-gen CarPlay that takes over all of your car's screens, is coming to new Aston Martin vehicles in the US and Canada. Hyundai and Kia have also committed to using CarPlay Ultra - Tom Warren (@tomwarren)

EU ruling: tracking-based advertising by Google, Microsoft, Amazon, X, across Europe has no legal basis

By Johnny Ryan via Irish Council for Civil Liberties

  • The Belgian Court of Appeal ruled that the Transparency & Consent Framework (TCF)—used by Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and X—is illegal under GDPR, invalidating consent popups deployed across 80% of the Internet.

  • The Court confirmed multiple GDPR infringements, including failure to ensure data security (Articles 5(1)f, 25, 32), improper consent collection (Articles 5(1)a, 6), and lack of transparency (Articles 12, 13, 14), directly impacting the legality of Real-Time Bidding (RTB) advertising practices.

  • This landmark decision, led by Dr. Johnny Ryan and enforced by the Belgian Data Protection Authority, mandates immediate compliance across Europe, signaling a major shift away from tracking-based advertising toward more privacy-respecting industry practices.
