🤖 Zuckerberg’s A.I. Bet, Swift Hits Android, Google’s Doppl

Plus: Windows Retires BSOD; AI Data Center Runs on Used Batteries.

Good morning. It’s Friday, June 27. Today we are covering:

Let’s dive in

Mark Zuckerberg Ramps Up Meta's A.I. Spending as Competition Heats Up

By Mike Isaac via The New York Times

  • Mark Zuckerberg has escalated Meta’s A.I. investments—including a $14.3 billion stake in Scale AI and outreach to over 45 OpenAI researchers—after the company's A.I. tools underperformed, triggering a leadership reshuffle and a scramble for top-tier talent.

  • Meta is exploring a shift away from its open-source Llama model, even considering using rivals’ closed-source A.I., while aggressively expanding its A.I. team and building a superintelligence lab to compete with OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic.

  • Despite releasing updated Llama models and courting high-profile names like Ilya Sutskever, internal tensions, benchmark manipulation, and questions about Meta’s A.I. mission have raised doubts about whether it can become a true A.I. superpower.

Swift, a coding language developed by Apple, is working to add Android support

By Ben Schoon via 9to5Google

  • Apple’s Swift language is officially expanding to Android through a newly formed “Android Working Group,” aiming to establish Android as a fully supported Swift platform.

  • The group’s goals include integrating Swift with Android's Java SDK, enabling official platform support, improving core packages like Foundation, and adding Android-specific continuous integration and debugging tools.

  • Although third-party tools like Scade previously allowed limited Swift use on Android, this marks the first coordinated effort to make Swift a viable alternative to Kotlin for Android development.

Google launches Doppl, a new app that lets you visualize how an outfit might look on you

By Aisha Malik via TechCrunch

  • Google has launched Doppl, a new experimental app on iOS and Android in the U.S., allowing users to virtually try on outfits using a full-body photo and images or screenshots of clothing.

  • The app uses AI to generate static images and videos of a digital version of the user wearing the selected outfit, enabling users to explore their style, save favorite looks, and share them with others.

  • Doppl builds on Google Shopping’s virtual try-on tools but personalizes the experience with your own animated body; as a Google Labs experiment, it may not always render fit or appearance accurately.

Windows is getting rid of the Blue Screen of Death after 40 years

By Tom Warren via The Verge

  • Microsoft is officially retiring the iconic Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) in favor of a redesigned Black Screen of Death in an upcoming Windows 11 update later this summer.

  • The new error screen drops the traditional blue background, frowning face, and QR code, opting for a streamlined black interface that highlights stop codes and faulty drivers to improve clarity for IT admins.

  • This overhaul is part of a broader push by Microsoft to boost system resilience, following last year’s CrowdStrike incident, and will launch alongside the new Quick Machine Recovery feature.

Crusoe, Redwood Partner on Data Center Powered by Used Batteries

By Michelle Ma via Bloomberg

  • Redwood Materials has launched the world’s largest deployment of second-life batteries, now powering a Crusoe Energy data center in Nevada.

  • The facility supports Project Stargate, an initiative linked to OpenAI, underscoring the AI sector’s growing need for alternative energy sources.

  • The collaboration highlights how cloud and AI infrastructure providers are increasingly relying on reused battery systems to secure clean, reliable power amid rising energy demands.
