🔍 Google Faces UK Heat, AI Bots Invade WhatsApp, Rom-Com Rewrites Tech History

Plus: Free Windows 10 Fixes and Apple’s Dashboard Dispute.

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, June 25. Today we are covering:

Let’s dive in

UK regulators may force Google to open search engine to more competition as AI threat grows

By Thomas Barrabi via New York Post

  • UK regulators may assign Google a “strategic market status” designation, enabling intervention to boost search engine competition amid rising concerns over its AI-driven features.

  • The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is exploring remedies like choice screens, bans on self-preferencing, and stronger publisher controls, citing harms from AI Overviews and high search ad costs.

  • Google criticized the CMA’s approach as overly broad, while the News/Media Alliance backed the probe, framing it as part of a global push to curb Big Tech dominance.

Meta's largest AI competitors are fighting for users inside its most popular chatbot app: WhatsApp

By Pranav Dixit via Business Insider

  • WhatsApp, used by over 3 billion people, has become a key battleground for AI chatbots, with OpenAI's ChatGPT and Perplexity gaining traction alongside Meta AI—despite the app being owned by Meta itself.

  • Through the WhatsApp Business Platform, rival AI companies can deploy chatbots without Meta's permission, expanding rapidly in markets like India and Brazil where WhatsApp serves as the main internet gateway.

  • Users are embracing a multi-bot ecosystem, mixing tools like Meta AI for group chats, ChatGPT for creative tasks, and Perplexity for search and fact-checking—even mid-flight—turning WhatsApp into a de facto AI marketplace.

What if computer history were a romantic comedy?

By Benjamin Mangrum via MIT Technology Review

  • Marchant’s play The Desk Set uses romantic comedy tropes to explore how 1950s America grappled with the rise of the “electronic brain” in workplaces dominated by white-collar expertise and managerial culture, ultimately reframing automation as an opportunity rather than a threat.

  • While characters initially fear that the computer Emmarac will replace human judgment and lead to technological unemployment, the narrative pivots to show that collaboration between humans and machines enhances rather than erodes professional identity and purpose.

  • The play mirrors classic comic structure by converting both the robotic man (Sumner) and the threatening machine into integrated parts of a new, reconciled workplace order, suggesting that the computerization of work can coexist with human spontaneity, humor, and emotional intelligence.

Microsoft makes Windows 10 extended security updates free, but there's a catch

By Tom Warren via The Verge

  • Microsoft is offering one year of free Extended Security Updates (ESU) for Windows 10 users—but only if they enable Windows Backup, which requires syncing settings and files to OneDrive, potentially triggering storage upgrade costs.

  • Users can alternatively pay $30 annually or redeem 1,000 Microsoft Reward points for updates, with all options accessible via a new enrollment wizard rolling out in July.

  • Free ESUs end on October 13, 2026 for consumers, while businesses can purchase up to three years of updates; devices accessing Windows 11 Cloud PCs via Windows 365 or Virtual Machines also qualify for free coverage.

𝕏: Microsoft was planning to charge consumers $30 for a year of extra security updates to Windows 10, but now it's making them free! ...with a catch. You'll have to enable Windows Backup - Tom Warren (@tomwarren)

Carmakers push back against Apple's takeover of the dashboard

By Kana Inagaki via Financial Times

  • Carmakers are increasingly resisting Apple’s expansion into dashboard operating systems, wary of ceding control over critical data and customer relationships.

  • The pushback reflects concerns about Apple’s deeper integration into vehicles via its updated CarPlay interface, which can take over screens and functions like climate control and instrument clusters.

  • Auto manufacturers are developing their own proprietary software platforms and collaborating with tech firms like Google to maintain control over the digital in-car experience.
